Chapter Seventeen

That mystery might be the answer to what the Councilor was holding back. Even if it was, what would she do with it given the knots the woman had her in after only one date?

“What is it?” she asked curiously as she wiggled her fingers to give her shield another hit. She wasn’t sure how much of it had dissipated with Azar-Rai’s retreat.

“The property’s a powerful site of good magick. Water and earth magick. Combined they can strengthen a water witch’s power or boost an aurai’s if she’s a west wind. It can also feed a woodland seeded’s magick.”

“I know why he’d want it, but does he even know this?”

“I don’t know, but if an aurai lays claim to that land, the demons will never stand a chance of winning this war here. In fact, they’ll likely lose it, because as you know, the South is the great staging point for every major battle the demons lost no matter where they were fought.”

“I thought whoever controlled the northern-most point was likely to come out of a conflict the victor,” she said with a frown.

“South is north for the demons,” Aidan told her. “If they can gain control of this region it will perfectly align the dark energies of both worlds, and they will win this war.”

“And gain control of human kind.”

“So, what are you going to do?” Aidan asked. “I can’t promise to follow your lead, but I’ll never betray you.”

Madison shook her head. She knew what she should do, but she did have a few scores to settle.

“I won’t tell you what to do, Aidan,” she said. “Fight where your gut tells you to.”

“You’re going to do as Carlonis always has,” she said softly. “Fight with the demons.”

She shrugged. “You have a better idea? I can’t betray my family.”

“Necron is using them because he needs your family’s land for the power boost it will give. He can use it as part of the Dark Edge to strengthen his holdings in this region and then he’ll take the Grange Place and the point of good that aligns with it to make it the exact opposite of the Dark Edge.”

“That’s not my problem,” she said evenly as she studied the screen of her tablet. A message was scrawled there, but she hadn’t remembered the Councilor typing anything. “Good has to fight its own battles.”

“At least warn the Councilor. No one has to know.”

“That’s a good idea,” she said. “She was trying to seduce me. I’ll use her and gain every scrap of information on the Grange Place she’s holding back.”

“I never thought you were that ruthless.”

“I am a Carloni, Aidan.” She stood and tossed a bill on the table before releasing the shield and grabbing her tablet. Besides, Azar-Rai had all but invited a seduction, hadn’t she? “We’ve got work to do, let’s get out of here.”

“Right,” Aidan muttered. “Whatever you say.”

“Remember your word, Aidan,” she said softly. “Don’t betray me. I don’t want to hurt you, but I will.” Aidan’s stare was cold, but her friend gave a slow nod before walking out ahead of her.
